Why do I "blog"?

My photo
Dr. Gan Siowck Lee

I am an academic. I think that's all you need to know about me. :-) Maybe you want to know why I "blog"? Right now, I use this blog to post articles I translated from the Chinese dailies. It's to help my "English-educated" friends feel the pulse of the "Chinese-educated" community in Malaysia. Before this, I was just using the blog to replace my homepage which almost died a natural death. I first built my homepage in 1993 and since then I have managed to maintain it by parking it on the servers of the various institutions I worked with. When I quit working for the institutions (and stopped writing a column in The Star)to join the rank of self-employed people in late 2004, I literally became homeless on the Web!:-( Then I found Geocities which hosted my homepage for a while until the free service was terminated in 2006 or thereabout. I have always maintained that if one is not a celebrity or a public figure or a newspaper columnist, one does not really need a blog because few people will actually read it! And, that's partly why I have so few postings on my blog! :-)
